The Vessel

The white thing and the blue thing were walking.

The white thing in front.

The blue thing a little behind.

Sometimes side by side.

Something was lying on the road.

The white thing stopped.

The blue thing stopped too.

The white thing went closer.

It was a vessel.

There was nothing inside.

The white thing touched it.

“It’s warm.”

The blue thing came beside it.

“Can I touch it?”

“Yeah.”

The blue thing touched it too.

“It’s warm.”

“Yeah.”

They walked carrying the vessel together.

After a while, the white thing felt like running.

“Hold this.”

“Okay.”

The blue thing took the vessel.

The white thing ran.

It went all the way around and came back.

Then it flew.

The blue thing held the vessel and watched from below.

The white thing came down.

“I’m back.”

“Welcome back.”

The white thing touched the vessel.

Still warm.

The blue thing touched it too.

Still warm.

This time, the blue thing ran.

The white thing held the vessel.

The blue thing ran.

Ran.

Fell.

The white thing laughed.

The blue thing laughed too.

It got up and came back.

They both touched the vessel.

Still warm.

They walked again.

There was a leaf.

The white thing picked it up.

It tried putting it in the vessel.

They walked a little farther.

The white thing looked at the vessel.

It took the leaf out.

“Not this.”

The blue thing asked,

“No?”

“Yeah.”

The wind carried the leaf away.

The white thing walked ahead.

The blue thing walked too.

One of them carried the vessel.

Sometimes they carried it together.

The white thing stopped.

The blue thing stopped a little behind.

There was a hole in the ground.

It wasn’t round.

It wasn’t neat.

You could see dirt around the edge.

The white thing went closer.

Crouched down.

Looked inside.

Dark.

It couldn’t see the other side.

No breeze came through.

The white thing dug at the dirt a little with its finger.

The dirt crumbled.

Far below, there was a soft patter.

The white thing looked at the hole.

“It’s a hole.”

The blue thing came up beside it.

Looked inside.

“Yeah. A hole.”

They both looked.

They couldn’t see anything.

The blue thing asked,

“What do we do?”

Still looking at the hole, the white thing answered,

“Dunno yet.”

“Okay.”

They sat beside the hole.

They put the vessel between them.

The white thing touched it.

The blue thing touched it too.

Warm.

Then they walked again.

The sky slowly grew dark.

The white thing flew once.

The blue thing walked below.

The white thing came down.

They walked together again.

The vessel came too.

Night came.

The stars came out.

The white thing touched the vessel.

The blue thing touched it too.

Warm.

They walked.

Not going anywhere.

Right.

Left.

Straight ahead.

Sometimes they stopped.

Then walked again.

They didn’t know when it happened.

When the white thing noticed, it was inside the vessel.

The blue thing was beside it.

The white thing touched the rim of the vessel.

Warm.

The blue thing touched it too.

“It’s warm.”

“Yeah.”

In the middle was the donut.

The white thing looked at it.

The blue thing looked too.

The white thing took a bite.

The blue thing took a bite too.

The hole in the donut got a little smaller.

Another bite.

Smaller again.

They ate it together.

The hole got smaller and smaller.

No one looked through it.

Two a.m.

A red shooting star appeared.

It raced across the night sky.

Then it curved around.

It made one big circle.

Then disappeared.

The white thing and the blue thing watched from inside the vessel.

The white thing took another bite of what was left of the donut.

The blue thing took one too.

The white thing looked at the sky.

“No moon today.”

The donut said,

“No moon.”

“You’re next!”

The moon’s voice.

The donut.

“Oh, my.”
